Workshops include:
- Education about the three R's of waste management:
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
REDUCE:
One of the first steps towards a greener lifestyle, is making changes and choices that reduce the amount of waste and
environmental harm you create as an individual.
Did You Know?
Americans use over 380 billion plastic bags per year and throw away approximately 100 billion.
Our workshops provide information and suggestions about:
- Cleaning products that can reduce/eliminate the chemicals & pesticides in your home/office
- Daily habits such as buying bulk or turning off power strips that can significantly reduce your environmental impact
- The ways you can eliminate unnecessary waste such as coffee cups and plastic bags
REUSE:
Finding ways to reuse items helps us all avoid the "throwaway culture"
that has formed in the U.S.
In this section we discuss:
- The effectiveness of garage sales, websites, etc. which help others reuse what you no longer want
- The actions of companies who reuse both pre and post consumer waste
- Ways to reuse food waste through composting
- Ways to replace throwaway items with reusable ones
Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil. 50 million tons of paper is consumed annually by Americans and more than 850 million trees are cut down.
RECYCLE:
Did You Know?
20 to 50 million metric tons of electronic waste is disposed worldwide each year and only 11.4% of this waste is recycled.
This section focuses on recycling within Rhode Island. Simple tips such as removing the cap from a plastic bottle before placing it in the bin can make the difference between whether or not an item is recycled.
We aim to inform residents about the following:
- The items that can be recycled in Rhode Island
- The meanings of the numbers on plastics and which can be recycled in Rhode Island
- The correct way to recycle computers, cell phones, batteries, etc.
